Rain Barrel Application

GUIDELINES FOR USE OF RAIN BARRELS

Rain barrels are defined as an above-ground storage receptacle with an automatic overflow system that collects and stores storm water runoff from the roof of a structure that would have been otherwise routed into a storm drain. By attaching roof downspouts to a receptacle, rain water can be collected to use for outdoor watering. Written approval from the Muirfield Design Control Committee must be obtained prior to installation. This guide sheet will help you prepare the application for the best outcome. These guidelines are in accordance with the Muirfield Design Standards. The following are required for compliance:

  1. Submit 2 complete applications including pertinent drawings, brochures, photos and samples prior to starting the project
  2. Maximum capacity of rain barrel is 80 gallons
  3. Rain barrels or storage containers are to be located at the side rear or rear of the residence, no more than one foot away from the primary structure, at least 7½’ from the property line and may not be placed at the front of the home or between the home and the street
  4. Maximum height including supporting framing is 48”above grade
  5. Connections from the downspout to the rain barrel must match the color of the downspout
  6. Provide several photos of the area
  7. Rain barrel styles must be an appropriate design to complement the residence and designed to appear similar to a planter, stone boulder or similar yard accessory
  8. Rain barrels must be neutral in color. Some designs may need to be painted to match the body or trim color of the home at the discretion of the MDCC
  9. Provide rain barrel detail sheet
  10. Provide a plan including the number, location, size and type of evergreen landscaping that will be used to screen the barrel
  11. Provide design review fee payment of $25.00
